First, using the Internet, find two potential jobs that might interest you. One of the positions must contain a vague job description and the other must contain a very specific job description. Post the job descriptions, cover letters, and résumé in a Microsoft Word document.



Lastly answer the following questions:

  • If this résumé were placed on your desk, would you likely invite the person for an interview?
  • Do the cover letters adequately address the unique needs of each job description?
  • Are all of the materials free from typographical and grammatical errors?

Helping Restaurants Fight Obesity
As consumers become increasingly concerned about obesity and health risks associated with nutrition, many seek more information about restaurant foods. American families are estimated to spend as much as half of their food dollars at restaurants and to consume about one third of their calories outside the home.
One U.S. senator is pushing a bill to require chain restaurants to list nutritional information for all menu items. Although this law has not been passed, your city would like to encourage restaurants to offer more nutritious menu choices.

Assume that you work for Partners for a Healthier Community (PHC), which is part of the City Health and Human Services Department. PHC has been working on a program called Healthy Dining. Its goal is to offer food establishments the opportunity to be recognized as Healthy Dining restaurants. In order to be listed, owners must meet certain criteria.
A PHC team devoted to the Healthy Dining program discussed a number of requirements. The team thought that restaurants ought to offer at least two choices of fruits or vegetables. They wanted choices other than potato dishes. The team was much opposed to french fries. What could be substituted for them? Perhaps salads? In regard to the menu, the team thought that Healthy Dining restaurants should have some low-fat and low-calorie menu items, and when they are offered, customers should know what they are. However, no minimum on the number of such items would be required. The team also thought that Healthy Dining restaurants should try to provide at least some dishes in smaller portion sizes or perhaps half portions. Milk was discussed, and team members suggested that restaurants move away from offering whole milk. Team members preferred 1 percent or nonfat milk when milk was offered as a beverage.
The team gave you the task of giving a PowerPoint presentation to restaurant owners who inquired about the Health Dining rating.

You Decide

The "You Decide" tab to the left presents a difficult and painful dilemma to you in an imagined professional role. Go through the You Decide presentation, make the decision it calls for, and write your weekly paper to make your decision and explain, in the given format, your reasoning and justification for it.
Your dilemma is that you have to make a painful medical decision and to explain, in writing, who benefits from what you decided, who gets denied a needed benefit, and why. The document is to be in the form of an official memorandum that will be kept for the record and could be potentially read by not only your Peer Review Committee, but also possibly those involved in charitable fundraising to support hospital development and others with financial interests in the choice made.

PART III: Presenting the Experiment

 

PART I: Collect Experimental Data

         Bend the provided 30 paper clips until they fail.
o   Follow the instructions presented in class on how to bend the paperclips.
         Record the number of bends until failure for all 30 clips
         Determine the frequency of failure from 1 to 20 bends
o   If the paperclip lasts more than 20 bends, note their frequency in the “20+ bends” row, and mention the frequency of this result in your paper.
         Record any additional observations about the paperclips that might be useful.

PART II: Organizing the Data

Create:                                                   
1.       A table and histogram (using EXCEL) from your team’s data (30 paperclips).
2.       A table and histogram (using EXCEL) from the data collected from the entire class (300 paperclips).

Be sure your graphs are appropriately scaled.  i.e., don't compare the # of bends of a group (30 paperclips) to the entire class (300 paperclips).  If you want to compare 30 paperclips to 300, convert to %.

PART III: Presenting the Experiment

Write a report to explain the experiment, show the data collected, and discuss the results.
1.       Include a cover page with appropriate information.
2.       The report must contain a 1) problem statement, 2) methods section, 3) results section, and 4) conclusion (make a conclusion by writing a short paragraph to answer the provided questions).
a.       Conclusion: discuss your observations regarding the frequencies of paperclip failure.
                                                              i.      Is there a distinct trend or trends?
                                                            ii.      Discuss why such a result may have occurred (re-examine the paperclips for any possible clues to the trends observed).

PAPER FORMAT NOTES:

·         Write your paper in 3RD PERSON!  i.e “The data show…”, NOT “I saw a trend in the data…”.  In engineering technical papers, the data is the focus (not you…).
·         Properly label title and axes of every graph.  No legend is required.
·         Explain what each graph and table is in the text.  Refer to each graph in the text (Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, etc.). 
·         Each graph must also have a caption centered directly BELOW the figure (i.e. Figure 1: Team results of…).
·         Each table must have a caption centered directly ABOVE the table (i.e. Table 1:  Team results of…).

·         Refer to the journal articles you read for the Tech Comm Project for format, header, figure, table, and caption examples.

Stress Echocardiography

The Cardiac.mtw Minitab file is from a study which was conducted to determine whether a drug called "Dobutamine" could be used effectively in a test for measuring a patient's risk of having a heart attack.  For younger patients, a typical test of this risk is called "Stress Echocardiography" which involves raising the patient's heart rate by exercise and then taking various measurements, such as heart rate and blood pressure.  This test cannot be used on older patients where their bodies cannot take the stress of hard exercise.  The key to assessing risk, however, is putting stress on the heart before taking the relevant measurements.  While exercise can't be used to create this stress for older patients, the drug Dobutamine can. This study was used to see whether the stress echocardiography test was still effective in predicting cardiac events when the stress on the heart was produced by Dobutamine instead of exercise.

Read the Case: Culture Clashes Make Change Difficult at SAP in chapter 15 of your text book. Use the Argosy University online library and the internet for additional research. Imagine you are an HR consultant called in to advise the leadership at SAP. Prepare a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation to present your responses to the information below. Use the notes section in PowerPoint to clarify your points. Include a title slide and a reference slide in addition to the main slides. Use at least one chart or graph and at least one other visual aid within your presentation. Utilize at least three outside resources to compose your response. Your presentation should be professional and correctly address your target audience.

CASE: CULTURE CLASHES MAKE CHANGE DIFFICULT AT SAP

Software giant SAP is based in Germany and is seeking to develop more efficient global operations. At the beginning of this decade, about two-thirds of its managers were German, and most key projects were led from its headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. The company’s leaders hoped SAP could become more agile and creative by bringing in a more diverse group of employees and sharing responsibility.
Unlike the more typical route to globalization by setting up sales offices and manufacturing facilities, SAP introduced change from the top down. The company made English its official language, even for meetings at headquarters. It hired foreign managers, making them half of the company’s top management. It placed product development under the leadership of Shai Agassi, based in Palo Alto, California. Agassi was charged with overseeing development groups in eight centers around the world.
One objective for the globalized SAP was to develop and implement software much faster. The process of creating a new program at SAP had been taking at least a year, as programmers in Walldorf carefully worked out each problem. The resulting programs were complex and difficult to install and didn’t work well with other companies’ products. At the same time, the Internet was making customers’ software more interconnected and increasing the pace of change. To keep up, SAP would have to change as well.


SAP hired programmers in India and China, as well as in Germany and the United States. German programmers focused on the coding associated with the software’s main tasks, American employees more often addressed programming that affects the user’s experience, and Indian programmers worked on updating and fixing the code in older programs. Some human resource functions were outsourced to Prague, in Eastern Europe.
The changes frightened many of the German employees, who worried they would lose their jobs and the company would lose its reputation for quality. Agassi assigned a group of 10 software developers to create 100 programs for analyzing data such as defects in parts. Their deadline: just 12 weeks. The developers first insisted the task was impossible, but when Agassi wouldn’t back down, they found a way to meet the deadline by writing a program that would write other programs. Still, they worried that working so fast would ultimately lead to problems with quality.

Employees in Germany complained about the move away from “good, old German engineering” and the requirement that they speak English in meetings. They criticized the “Americanization of SAP.” Eventually, they rallied enough support to form a workers’ council, similar to a union, to help workers find other jobs at SAP when positions were moved to other countries. So far, though, the company has avoided layoffs at headquarters—in fact, it has hired programmers.
Personnel director Klaus Heinrich guided American executives in working with engineers in each country. For example, he urged them to manage German workers by making a good impression with hard work and quality. Managers learned to give German employees plenty of leeway and give Indian employees plenty of attention. Still, Agassi, the U.S.-based head of product development, resigned out of frustration with the level of conflict.
